Boomerangs in Tears of the Kingdom are the video game equivalent of a Labrador retriever: they love you, they leave your hand, and they usually come back with something questionable in their mouth. It is 2026, I am still playing TotK, still fusing weird monster parts to weapons, and still pretending my boomerang throws are tactical. The game has six boomerangs, and because I cannot resist a list, I ranked them from my least favorite to the one I would trust in a sword fight. This is deeply unscientific. My inventory is a mess. Let us begin.

The quick and dirty ranking
| Rank | Boomerang | Base Attack | Type | Where I got it | My one-line review |
|---|---|---|---|---|---|
| 6 | Boomerang | 7 | One-handed | Lanayru Wetlands, Linebeck Island | Wooden starter trauma |
| 5 | Lizal Boomerang | 8 | One-handed | Hyrule Castle, common Lizalfos drop | Not decayed, still noodle |
| 4 | Pristine Boomerang | 8 | One-handed | The Depths, Shadow Soldiers | Shiny, slightly better |
| 3 | Giant Boomerang | 11 | Two-handed | Hyrule Castle, Observation Room | Big metal frisbee with ambitions |
| 2 | Sea-Breeze Boomerang | 16 | One-handed | Hebra Canyon Mine chest or Toon Link amiibo | Wind Waker nostalgia hit |
| 1 | Pristine Giant Boomerang | 23 | Two-handed | The Depths, Shadow Soldiers | Big shiny metal frisbee of doom |
6. Boomerang: the wooden starter trauma

The regular Boomerang is decayed, which is TotK speak for it has seen better days and also several worse ones. It has 7 base attack, one-handed handling, and durability that makes me nervous every time I press the throw button. It is wooden, so do not take it into extremely hot regions unless you enjoy watching your equipment audition for a campfire. On the bright side, you can toss it through flames to set it alight, then press B when it returns so Link does not personally become the campfire. I found mine around the Lanayru Wetlands, where a green Lizalfos patrols Linebeck Island east of Wetland Stable. It is a fine tutorial boomerang. It is not a fine anything-else boomerang.
5. Lizal Boomerang: metal, but not mighty

The Lizal Boomerang is a strange little upgrade. It is not decayed, which is nice, but its base attack is still only 8 and its durability is not exactly legendary. It is metal, so it survives hot areas, but it also turns Link into a lightning rod during thunderstorms. I learned that the hard way, and by learned I mean I heard the thunder crack and immediately regretted my fashion choices. You can find Lizal Boomerangs on Lizalfos around Hyrule Castle. There is also a respawning one near the castle edges, buried under a breakable wall, so bring a bomb flower, Vow of Yunobo, or a rock-fused melee weapon. It is a perfectly serviceable boomerang if you have low standards and a spare shield.
4. Pristine Boomerang: the shiny middle child

Once you break a weapon on the Surface, its pristine version can show up in the Depths. The Pristine Boomerang has the same 8 attack as an unfused Lizal Boomerang, but it has better durability. It also sparkles, which makes me feel fancy while I am still doing mediocre damage. It is wooden, so the heat rule still applies. Pristine weapons are carried by Shadow Soldiers standing on cairns in the Depths, and they respawn during Blood Moons. I like the Pristine Boomerang. I do not love it. It is the boomerang equivalent of clean socks: useful, respectable, and not the reason I boot up the game.
3. Giant Boomerang: a two-handed commitment

The Giant Boomerang is where things get fun. It has 11 base attack, it is two-handed, and it is metal, so it works in hot areas. The catch is that Link cannot use a shield while wielding it, which means my defense strategy becomes dodging and hoping. I found one in the Observation Room of Hyrule Castle, reached by jumping over the wall where Link and Captain Hoz saw Princess Zelda. There is a ledge into the Observation Room, a grate leading to the Royal Hidden Passage, and a Blue Lizalfos on the staircase holding the Giant Boomerang. Fuse something nasty to it and it stops being a novelty. It becomes a large metal apology for your missing shield.
2. Sea-Breeze Boomerang: nostalgia with a 16 attack stat

The Sea-Breeze Boomerang is for everyone who played Wind Waker and immediately heard the ocean theme in their head. It is one-handed, wooden, and has 16 base attack, which makes it stronger than any boomerang found on the Surface. I got mine from the chest in Hebra Canyon Mine, though scanning the Toon Link amiibo is another option. The route is a little fiddly: enter the Hyrule Ridge Chasm near Runakit Shrine and Lindor's Brow Skyview Tower, find Tikanur Lightroot nearby, then head north to Mu-ufatur Lightroot, which corresponds to Rutafu-um Shrine on the Surface. Hebra Canyon Mine is right next to that Lightroot. Is it worth the trip? For the nostalgia and the attack power, yes. For my sense of direction, absolutely not.
1. Pristine Giant Boomerang: the best of the bunch

The Pristine Giant Boomerang is the champion. It has 23 base attack, it is two-handed, and it only appears in the Depths. That means no shield, but who needs defense when you can throw a giant shiny metal crescent at a Bokoblin and call it strategy? It is carried by Shadow Soldiers, but different regions of the Depths carry different weapons. I had some luck near the path leading to the Drena Canyon Bargainer Statue, which corresponds to the Forgotten Temple on the Surface, but it is not a guaranteed spawn. Also, the pristine version will not show up until you have found and broken a decayed Giant Boomerang on the Surface. This is the boomerang I want in my inventory when things go wrong. It is big, it is shiny, and it makes me feel like I know what I am doing.
How I actually use boomerangs
-
🪃 Fuse a powerful monster part to the boomerang before throwing it. Base attack is cute; fused attack is better.
-
⏪ Try Recall on a thrown boomerang. It retraces its path and can hit the target again before returning to Link.
-
⚡ Do not equip metal boomerangs during thunderstorms unless you enjoy dramatic consequences.
-
🔥 Keep wooden boomerangs out of extremely hot regions, or accept that your weapon may become a temporary torch.
-
🛡️ Remember that two-handed boomerangs lock out your shield, so plan your dodges accordingly.
My final verdict is simple: the Pristine Giant Boomerang wins, the Sea-Breeze Boomerang wins my heart, and the regular Boomerang wins a participation ribbon. In 2026, with more games than ever demanding my attention, I am still here ranking boomerangs. That probably says something about me. It definitely says something about my inventory.
